CASE STUDY 1
Doskocil Manufacturing - Dogloo KD Doghouse
Background
Doskocil Manufacturing Company, Inc., manufacturer of Petmate® pet products, initially pioneered the production of plastic pet carriers for the airline industry. Today, the company is the nation’s leading manufacturer and marketer of both plastic pet carriers and structural foam doghouses, as well as a leading supplier of cat products, soft pet bedding, and feeding and watering systems. Upon the merger with California-based Dogloo, Inc., maker of the popular igloo-shaped doghouse, a new consumer need emerged. Consumers were challenged with getting the large, single hooded doghouses into their small to mid-sized vehicles.
Project Goal
To create a similar structural foam doghouse as the existing product by maintaining a 28” vertical height when installed and a 12” total overall package height for shipment and retail shelf placement.
Project Scope
Point Innovation’s design and development team worked closely with the many facets of DMC including sales, marketing, product development and manufacturing. A knock down (KD) solution was derived by nesting three varied size structural foam rings to form to hood of the doghouse. The product incorporated multiple, desirable features including; snap-together assembly, rain diverting door rim, extended entry and a top access portal designed to accept a slide vent and future accessories. The color and texture were carefully selected to properly blend into a common backyard environment.
Business Success
Doskocil exceeded revenue exceptions within the first six months of the introduction of the Dogloo KD and the Dogloo KD Pro.
